Chimpanzee Trekking in Rwanda – Nyungwe Forest

About Nyungwe Forest Home of Chimpanzees Rwanda

Nyungwe forest is among the few national parks found in Rwanda and it’s the best place to enjoy a Chimpanzee trekking Safari, primate watch, birding safaris as well as canopy walks over the verdant forest canopy.

However chimpanzee trekking is the number one tourist activity within this park,  and chances of seeing these chimps here are very high despite the fact that they are hard to pin down and at times may take visitors several hours of trekking  before finally finding them.

The chimpanzee treks are guided by park rangers who will lead you through the forest, these are very knowledgeable about the behavior of the chimps and will lead you on the search for them.

Once you meet them. You will be permitted to spend some time in their midst observing them and taking photos. It is a very exciting experience.

Afterwards the well trained park guides will escort you out of the chimpanzee habitat back to the starting point at the park head quarters.

Best time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe

We recommend trekking during the dry months from July to October when the forest paths are less slippery. But even so, this is the busiest time in the tourist industry and yet the number of trekking permits is limited. For that reason we recommend that make your reservations earlier to guarantee availability of the Permits.

There are three different types of accommodations offered within this park and these are categorized mainly into three:

  1. Luxury accommodation: this category offers very lavish facilities including self contained washrooms, very nice linen, comfortable beds, TV among many others. A good example is Nyungwe Forest Lodge.
  2. Another category is the mid-range accommodation such as Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel
