Nyungwe Forest National Park
This is located in the south eastern part of Rwanda extending for over 1000 sq km. The park has a very unique Afro- montane appearance and its size is the most outstanding on East and Central Africa. The park is one of the olden parks dating way back in ice age.
Nyungwe F.N.P varies in altitude from 1600m to 2950 above sea level, with temperatures ranging between 0 to 30 degrees.
With the pre-historic atmosphere it incredibly rich in bio diversity. This forest is a home to different trees, shrub and flowering plants amounting to over 250 species. The forest is wonderful with different shades of green made up by the mosses that generate the marvelous green shade.
The park also has birds species like Red-faced woodland Warbler, yellow-eyed black, Rwenzori turacos and many others. More exciting species that require a night drive like the Albertine owlet, fraser’s Eagle owl plus Rwenzori Nightjar.
Several large mammals inhabit the forest including the leopard, golden cat, bush pigs and the black fronted dicker. Nyungwe is one of the most important ontological sites in Rwanda, harboring almost 300 bird species of which half a dozen are restricted to Albertine rift. The avian high of the Nyungwe is Blue Turaco-outlandishly colored bird that is turkey like in appearance and steams from tree to tree in the forest canopy.
N yungwe also harbors 13 species if primates, these include: chimpanzees and the handsome L’Hoest’s monkey with his flowing skirt. Troops of a hundred strong Angola Colobus are an acrobatic delight. Nyungwe is also home to the habituated species such as the Mangaby and the Blue monkey.
The park in altitude from 1600m to 2950m above sea level, with temperatures ranging between 0degrees celicius and 30 degrees celicius . With a pre-historic atmosphere it is incredibly rich in bio-diversity. The forest supports over 250 different types of trees and shrubs and the vast range of flowering plants, among which are over 100 species of Orchids and giant Lobelia, which stand out on their own as if extra terrestrial.
A good winding road runs through the forest and follows the mountain summits. It is one of the few places in the world where one can look onto the rainforest canopy and in some instances into the forest itself.
