AIR UGANDA CANCELS CODE SHARING AGREEMENT WITH RWANDA

Air Uganda has cancelled a Code Share agreement with Rwanda Air that had been signed in June 2010 and the Rwanda Air’s Chief Executive Officer, John Mirenge said there revenue will not be affected because they have already introduced a new flight in the route so nothing will be affected.

He said the airline has a morning flight to Entebbe via Bujumbura and a direct evening flight.

The signing of the code was to enable both airlines and travel agents to sell tickets on each others flights to sell the same customers the same fares on the same tickets therefore making it cheaper and simple for their customers to use any of the airlines.

These fares of the tickets would make them the leading players in the region to compete against the main dominant Kenya Airways in the region.

The airline code share agreement had been announced in June 2010 and for code sharing partnership, people tend to enjoy a return from Uganda and Rwanda in a day by passing Nairobi therefore avoiding stopovers.

Airline business has increased in Rwanda because more airlines have added Kigali on their destination menus like South African Airways will run three weekly flights, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines are expected to start operating this year.

RwandAir operates in 12 destinations and has fleets that include two Boeing 737-800s sky-interior, a Dash8, two Boeing 737-500.

In January, the airline sold its two 50 seater CRJ200 with an intention of changing them with brand new regional jets.

Air Uganda operates in 7 destinations and has been in operation since November 2007 with two CRJ-200s and two MD-87s.
