Best Time to Visit Rwanda, When to go, Rwanda weather
For any traveler, first thing you need to know about a place that you intend to visit is its climatic changes so that you know the best time of the year to visit. When planning your safari in Rwanda, you should know when is the best time to visit Rwanda although the answer may not be as easily as it seems because best time is determined by where you are visiting and your interests. Kigali can be visited all year round however this won’t be the case for those heading to mountainous or forested areas.
In spite of the fact that there are some irregularities in the weather patterns due to factors like global warming among others, we can still though challengingly predict the changes. The latest report based on records, and experiences predict the climate changes of Rwanda all year round. Rwanda lies in the southern part of the equator therefore it lies in a fairly high altitude enabling it to enjoy the beautiful tropical highland climate together with lots of rainfall. The temperatures vary from one place to another and it’s mainly determined by the altitude. For example in Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali, 21°C is usually the average every day temperature.
From March to May
Between these months, its Rwanda’s long rainy season which means this time of the year does not favor those that intend to visit places like the volcanoes for activities like mountain gorilla or Chimpanzee trekking or other forest activities because when the rain is very heavy and persistent, then gorilla trekking becomes very challenging because the tracking trails are very muddy and slippery making it difficult to move through the forest. Also game viewing is not that easy and so may not be able to see a number of the wildlife as you would during the dry season.
June to Mid September
From June to mid-September, this is a very dry period and this time of the year is the best time for anyone to visit Rwanda more so those that intend to visit that virunga region for tourism purposes like gorilla trekking. It is the best time for trekking because then it will be a bit dry within these rain-forest where the gorillas and chimpanzees stay however, you should carry a rain coat and boots because it may rain anytime.
Also during the dry season, hiking is a lot easier which works in the favor of those that intend to hike while in Rwanda. Game viewing is very easy in these months as the animals often converge by the water sources to quench their thirst since water is very scarce in some parts of the park. This means that you defininately know where to find the animals during the game drives.
October to November
This is one month rainy season, it’s the shortest and after this, is a short dry season that comes in from December to February. During the short rains, primates trekking can be done but may also be a bit tough. On the other hand, this is the best time for the bird watchers because around this time, most of the smaller plants and trees are flowering thus attracting lots of birds. You can therefore book a birding safari and it begins towards the end of the rainy season. The photographers can use this time as well to take the best pictures because there are lots of flowers that are flourishing, vegetation is all green and the skies are blue thus offering a great background for you photographs.
Otherwise, Rwanda can be visited any time of the year because even during the dry seasons, there is a light cloud cover which moderates temperatures and helps prevent sunburns.
