Kinigi warmed up with the gorilla naming event

 

Areas around the  Volcanoes National Park in the Northern district of Musanze were all so  eager for the gorilla naming event held on Saturday June 22, 2013, attracting  people from different parts of the world to be a part of the event. This was the ninth ‘Kwita Izina’ as it is called and this time, they will have 12 new babies to name, working under the theme “Celebrating Nature, Empowering Communities”, that is according to the information from the Tourism and Conservation Department at the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

Holding such celebration for such wonderful animals is also a way of appreciating all those who take care of them ranging from rangers, vets and the communities living near their habitat. According to the sources, Kwita Izina is motivated by the ancient Rwandan tradition of naming a baby soon after its birth and so far there are about 161 gorillas that have been named for the past nine years that the event has been held. 

Rwanda’s community is highly appreciated for considering wildlife conservation and their conservation efforts have led to a 26.3% growth in the population of gorillas since 2003 and Kwita Izina has been a contributing factor to community awareness. This year, the even t will be more interesting as they will include performances by Rwanda’s famous National Ballet and local musicians to entertain both the local and international guests who will be present for the function.

There is also be a caravan tour, visitors and Rwandans get the opportunity to jump on board of a caravan tour from Kigali to Kinigi and discover some of the country’s most beautiful sights and environmental wonders. This tour is best way for you to explore Rwanda’s natural beauty, witness as well appreciate its rich cultural heritage. The tour ends today at the annual Kwita Izina venue where the ceremony will be.

Meanwhile Rica Rwigamba who is the boss at the Tourism Department in RDB says that Guests will stop off at Shyorongi to take in the spectacular views of Kigali as well as at the breathtaking Nyabarongo River look out which is a beautiful place, very perfect for photographers before proceeding to Kinigi. She also added that the guests will be treated to a personal tour to one of Rwanda’s best-loved food and beverage companies called Urwibutso Enterprises located in Nyirangarama from where they will taste the famous cuisine.
