The Congo Nile Trail in Rwanda

bikingThe Congo Nile Trail is along the Lake Kivu that begins at Rubavu district, through Rutsiro district, past Karongi district, Nyamasheke district and eventually ends in Rusizi District. It is perfect for those in interested In hiking and mountain biking adventure o their Rwanda Safari. It is a 227 km trail with beautiful terrain, clear water of the Kivu shoreline and stunning rolling hills. It’s amazing trail may be completed in a 10-days hike, but travelers with less time can also enjoy this adventure as it can be done in parts.

Biking along the Congo Nile Trail

Congo Nile Trail may be completed in just 5 days while biking, with breathtaking views and great cultural experiences en route. This trail is best for adventure travelers as well as a great way to explore Rwanda on just two wheels. For those with less adventure time certainly you will enjoy a shorter section of the trail which will also be very rewarding. You will either return to your lodge for the overnight or jump in the wilderness as you watch the beautiful stars overnight before returning departing the following day.

Camping and other Accommodation on the Congo Nile Trail

There are 8 well serviced and properly marked campsites which are spaced out down the Congo Nile Trail. There are also some additional accommodation facilities which include guesthouses within the bigger towns. Most of our visitors prefer to sped the majority of the 10 days on this safari trail are spent camping under the stars, on the edges of villages or plantations. (A couple of the campsites are affiliated with the area orphanages or schools and orphanages). For those of you interested in sleeping out but lack camping gear, the Rwanda Development Board offers a number of these for hire.

Hiking the Congo Nile Trail

This amazing trail requires 10 days to complete when on foot. It has more than ten coffee-washing-stations, 3 tea plantations, 3 cities, several villages, and a wide beach cover with beautiful waterfalls and valleys, not to forget the breathtaking views. The Congo Nile Trail is a hiker’s true paradise, and presents some of the best hiking experiences across the entire country. The trail Winds along the edges of the Lake Kivu, through the beautiful peaks of the country’s endlessly verdant thousand hills. Despite this being a challenging hiking experience, it is very rewarding making it to the top elevation which stands at 2630m. Hiking will give you an opportunity to walk though the villages and meet the locals go about their day to day activities visit their historic church and enjoy a swim in the lake.
