The Rwanda Museums | Rwanda Cultural Safaris

The museums are managed by the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda and today there are six sites across the country. The National Museum of Rwanda

This is located in Butare. Among its collections are maps, ethnographic displays, art objects, photos, historical materials, artifacts about agriculture, and architectural displays, in addition to displays of wood-carving, hunting, metallurgy, fishing, pottery, textiles, and basketry. The grounds of this museum in addition are gardening grounds with indigenous vegetation and also there is a training center for making traditional craft.

Among the collected materials on the Rwanda Genocide in the Rwanda National Museum are testimonies on what transpired during the horrifying time which I now inked in Rwanda’s history. These testimonies were given by several elders within the community, there are also photographs videos plus audios.

Natural History Museum (Kigali) / Dr Richard Kandt House

There are a couple of New objects, among which are a number that have never been showcased before, today on put on view at the Dr Richard Kandt House (Natural History Museum). Among them are: steel wheels each weighing more than 250kg. Meanwhile on Lake
Kivu, serious Archeological Work is on going to recover ship that sunk in this lake. Some of the pieces of evidence here are aid to be from World War I as this is the place where the German soldiers surrendered to the Belgian soldiers on Rwandan soil.

Environmental Museum.

This is a recently opened new museum will be opening its doors very soon. Based at Lake Kivu in the Western Province, the building will consist of two floors with a traditional herbal medicine garden based on rooftop. It is the first and only environment museum on the continent that will be exhibiting energy sources both renewable and none renewable. The museum will be the center of education for our visitors, helping them to understand and safeguard their environment and ensure an integrated and durable development.

Kings’ Palace

At the King’s palace, the culture of Rwanda is revived with an exhibition of the long-horned white traditional cows also called “Inyambo”. You will see several shepherds tending to the cows, as they recite poems and sing traditional songs for visitors that go to this place.

Each year in the month of August The National Harvest Festival which was reestablished three years ago by the Prime Minister Rt. Hon Dr Pierre Damien Habumuremye is celebrated. The festival highlights the different rituals plus customs which were once routine at the Kings Palace and across the country.

National Art gallery and the Social & Cultural Museum

Rwanda has joined the rest of the world, in the annually celebrations of the International Council Organization of Museums (ICOM) day. This takes place in the month of May at the National Art Gallery in Rwesero Southern Province. This Art Gallery has integrated a kids’ studio with a thesis “let it grow”. They are currently collecting drawings across the continent including the Netherlands, Rwanda, Uganda, UK, and Japan among others. The studio centers on kids between the ages of 4 and 14. The initiative is to endow the kids with art, social and cultural skills that come through inquisitiveness, creativity and general knowledge from these kids.
