The Akagera national park is located in the northeastern part of the country and it is largely covered with the savannah type of vegetation mixed with grasslands with large leaves, the acacia woodland and there is the Akagera River on the lower part of the park.

This is s a home to different species of birds like the red faced barbet, the Africa harrier-hawk, the Sousa’s shrinke, the greater blue eared starling, the white collared Olive back and many more. This therefore makes it a great place to visit for those that are interested in watching birds. Beside the birds, it is a home to so many others animals and one major activity done in the park is game watching. You can expect the zebras, elephants, giraffes, antelopes like the diminutive oribi, the handsome Chestnut Coated impala, the shy bushbuck, buffalo, a leopard, a warthog, spotted hyena and if you are lucky, you may see the astray lion.

You can enjoy a boat ride as well as a walk in the wetlands like the Akanyru wetland or the Nyabarongo wetland or any others as the park has a mosaic of wetlands and lakes along the course of River Akagera and the eastern boundary.  When you walk through the papyrus, you will find the papyrus canary, the carruthers’ cisticola and more.
