Animals in national parks increase

The number of zebras in Uganda has increased in Uganda national parks according to the current report of Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

In 1960s, the estimated number of population was 10, 000, in 1982, 5,500, in 1995 3, 200, in 2003 2,800 and according to the current research, the number has increased to 11,814.

Dr.Andrew Seguya the executive director if UWA said the current number of zebras is bigger than the number in 1960s.he said therefore there is need to fence the protected areas to avoid losing the wild animals.

Charles Tumwesigye the Chief Conversation Area Manager said zebras in Lake Mburo National Park have to be protected because the lion has disappeared in the park until today.

About five years ago, three lions came in the park and UWA says the expectation is very   low. Zebras have not been killed by poachers but the most affected species are buffaloes and hippos.

The number of elephants has also increased according to UWA reports and Tumwesigye said the main reason for the increase has been the good conservation practices.

According to conservationists, the changing of wildlife environment to farmlands has been one of the factors leading to the decline.

Climatic change has been another factor that has affected the number of Uganda Kobs mostly in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The number of lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park has also reduced by 50% because of the attacks by Basongoro herdsmen and poisoning of cattle by fishermen in the fishing villages who take their cattle to feed on grass in some parts of the park and these people have poisoned the lions.
