Hiking in an effort to meet the wonderful mountain gorillas

Uganda, Rwanda and DR. Congo are the 3 nationals blessed with high population of these wonder primates called the mountain gorillas. They are found in the volcanoes forest range that is shared by the 3 countries and tracking these gorillas is a huge tourism activity to the 3 countries. Just like in Uganda, in Rwanda it’s the country’s touristic hot-spot in the Virunga Mountain located in Northern Rwanda.

From Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, it takes about 3 hours to get to the park going through Rwanda’s Rocky Mountains covered with thick green vegetation and a heavy fog. The hike is about 4 hours to the top of the Volcano Park, in the middle of a bamboo forest, where the mountain gorillas feed on the bamboo buds and when on top, you are at 15,000 feet chain of volcanoes in East Africa, along the northern border of Rwanda and overlooking DR Congo and Uganda.

When you come across the gorillas, it is the most exciting wild experience ever. They are in families and the most organized one and also breeds so fast is the Sabyinyo gorilla family. Rwanda’s Sabyinyo gorilla family is an easily accessible group led by the mighty Guhonda, the largest silverback of all the 10 groups. The Sabyinyo silverback is well known for his massive appearance.

There are a number of prominent people that have had the opportunity to visit the Sabyinyo family among which is the Microsoft Chairman, billionaire Bill Gates and name a baby gorilla Keza, there is Christine Lagarde who is the director of IMF, among others.
