Rwanda tables the tourism bill

François Kanimba who is the Minister for Trade and Industry in Rwanda believes that the industry’s poor performance has been largely as a result of lack of regulatory framework that the industry follows. He said so while tabling a Bill that is intended to help regulate the industry. The bill was presented to the Chamber of Deputies and during the event Kanimba emphasized the point that tourism is a pillar of economic development and the legislation was a tool necessary to regulate and guide the tourism sector to prosperity.

He said that there have been so many things missing in the way the industry has been ran despite the fact that there is a government agency in charge of promoting the policy on tourism development. For instance, there have been gaps between the ways in which different public institutions work with investors in the sector something that will be addressed so he said.  This law will put in place clear guidelines for the development of the sector that is why it has got to be adopted quickly in order to improve the sector.

The Bill will cater for regulating, licensing and grading of tourism entities, inspection of tourism entities, activities and also state obligations of tourism entities as well as set up a concept of tourism development levy for capacity building. Hopefully with all this in progress, tourism industry will yield much more revenue as expected. Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Budget and National Patrimony MP Constance Mukayuhi said that the new policies should not entertain sex tourism for the good of the country.
