3 Females among Rwanda’s 9 Pilot Graduates

Among the most resent new pilot graduates in Rwanda last week were three ladies. These graduated in Addis Ababa’s Ethiopian Airlines aviation academy and these were part of the total 143 graduates that had successfully finished their courses in this academy which is among the best Aviation Schools on the African continent. This is a good indication of the unmatched devotion of the airline to be an employer but additionally speaks a lot about the government of Rwanda’s persistence to coach its citizens as pilots as well as aircraft engineers to scale back the dependence on retirees.

The synergy between RwandAir as well as Ethiopian Airlines dates back a number of years to this point, in terms of training, obligatory simulator trainings for the pilots as well as maintenance of aircrafts.

When Girma Wake the former Ethiopian Airlines’ CEO joined RwandAir as Chairman Board of Directors, it was an indicator for knowledgeable industry observers as the beginning of the long drive towards better cooperation between both of these African carriers. In August 2014 Mikael Gobena who previously worked with Ethiopian Airlines as Senior Vice-President Global Sales and commercial officer for over 26 years, took over as the Commercial Director.

It is clear that Ethiopian Airlines become the partner of choice for RwandAir for even better cooperation, shortly after Etihad suddenly ended talks in 2015. Although no official statement has been given up to now from both ends, in the eyes of commentators it’s now a very short time left before the two ends announced their partnership officially.

This will offer Ethiopian a tighter hold on African aviation, after the initial involvement at ASKY, then Malawian Airlines and recently engagement in the creation of a brand-new airline within the DR Congo. Today RwandAir prides in an expanding network across the African continent serving Accra, Brazzaville, Lagos, Libreville and Douala not forgetting all its East African destinations apart from Mwanza as well as Zanzibar. What is left is when the Rwanda government will sign this agreement.
