RDB launches the volcanoes protection program

A number of officials from the north-western part of Rwanda have appreciated the proposal presented to them by the Association Rwandaise des Ecologistes ARECO-Rwanda Nziza which is a local non-governmental organization that was started to ensure that they preserve the Volcanoes National Park and it is vicinity.

ARECO is operating in the area of environmental protection in the north-western part of the country and according to the officials, Volcanoes national park has been threatened by climate change and human encroachment something that may lead to its destruction unless something is done to deal with the issues.

This project will be implemented in areas of Nyabihu and Rubavu districts in the Western Province as these are highly prone to disasters due to the fact that they are mountainous areas in nature. It will be implemented in six sectors that are close to the park especially because over the years, National Volcano Park has been threatened by things like the  demographic factors, poaching habit, limited buffer zone, water collection, degradation of the habitat, uncontrolled fires, and diseases among other factors, among others.  All the above factors have contributed to the reduction in the size of the park.

ARECO Rwanda Nziza is also involved in helping residents in activities intended to fight against the degradation of the park and its surrounding area. They will be planting bamboo trees, trees mixed with other plants, and construction of tanks to help residents with water supply so that they do not have to fetch it from inside the park.

Residents will also be given the modern stoves so that they do not go to the park to look for firewood. And the Nyabihu District mayor Addoulatif Twahirwa believes that the move is a sign of collaboration between the government and non-governmental organizations and will be very vital in preserving the environment.

The project is part of a big project that is being implemented by various organisations called the “Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Congo Basin’ Forests” (COBAM) and there are about six forests across seven states from the Economic Community of Central African that will benefit from the projects.
