What to do on Lake Kivu

Boat ride: For the leisure or tourism activities, you can go for a boat ride along the lake and this can be a speed boat or can use the local hire boat, sail along the lake and get the opportunity see species of bird life, enjoy the view, enjoy the breeze as you relax a bit.

Visit the Islands: Besides the boat rides, you can also visit places like the Napoleon Island which is a home to thousands of bats, you check out the Amahoro Island or visit the inhabitants of Bugarama and Nkomo islands. Some of the hotels like Paradis Malahide are located one island where you can relax as you enjoy the view as well as the breeze.

Hiking: You also do some hiking in the area, you can follow the Congo-Nile trail that goes from the Gisenyi to Kamembe along the shores of Lake Kivu. This hiking may require you to have a guide as well as porters and the other alternative is hiking the Niyragongo Volcano. This may be a good exercise for those that love hiking and have a little bit of more time in the area.

There are also water sports activities that you can engage yourself in like wind surfing, Kayaking, jet-ski although preparations for this have to be done earlier since some of the equipments that are used have to be hire elsewhere like. Those that love swimming, Lake Kivu is one of the safest lakes to swim in as there are no crocodiles or hippos to scare you and should not worry about bilharzias too.
