UNTAPPED ATTRACTIONS TO IMPROVE KENYA TOURISM.

Kenya’s 50th independence anniversary will be celebrated in style by putting an operation to name 50 unique attractions in the country. The project will be completed by 2013 intime for the independence celebrations.

Kenya got its independence on 12th December 1963 from Britain and will be marking its first anniversary in two years.

The project will be managed by the 50 resources of Kenya Trust together with Kenya Tourist Board, The National Museum of Kenya and the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Mr. Hartmut Fiebig who has been managing the project said the project will help to market the unknown tourist destinations.

Mr. Feibig is a German who has been working as a photographer in Kenya for 21 years said the  major  reason is to promote domestic tourism by making the Kenyans know  more attractions in the country and to attract more visitors and investors from  abroad.

KTB has run a number of promotions to encourage domestic tourism and the new plan will be successful. In October, KTB ran 10 places to visit in your life time online together with travel diaries and a number of exhibitions in parts of the country.

Mr. Feibig said almost 30% of the country’s tourist potential has been advertised leaving a big portion unknown.kenyans and other shareholders will be required to name the most wanted sites and attractions and they will be put on the list of chosen attractions by an official committee in 2012.

This project will improve tourism  whose  earnings increased by 11% in the first 10 months of 2011 compared to 2010.the number of tourist arrivals has increased to 16%  compared to  2010 in the 10 months.

The tourism sector has recorded revenue of shs 81.6 billion compared to shs 73.4 billion in 2012.

Although the earnings have risen for the 10 months of 2011, the abduction of tourists from   Somali militias and threats from Al Shabaab rebels.
