There were about 40 buffaloes that escaped from Akagera National Park and they went on rampage destroying people’s crops, other properties in the villages of Mwiri and Murundi sectors in Kayonza district. According to some residents in the area, these buffaloes attacked Mucucu and Kagyeyo villages of Mwiri and Murundi sectors.

John Mugabo who is the mayor of Kayonza said that the animal attack was really huge and that they will be pushed back to the park with the assistance of Rwanda Development Board (RDB). The huge herd of buffaloes that is moving around villages but no one is sure whether they jumped the fence or were fenced out of the park. Apparently there is a fence, but it can’t hold some animals inside the park for instance, not so long ago, there is a leopard that attacked villages and killed seven cows as well as injuring two people.

Fortunately this time, there is no one who was hurt in this attack that is according to Benoit Nsengiyumva who is the Eastern region Police spokesman. He said Police together with RDB and park managers were doing everything it takes to drive back the animals to the park.

Aloys Musana who is a resident said that this kind of incident is keeping them behind as they can not develop if the crops are constantly destroyed by wild animals. It seems the fence is not helping at all.  Akagera which is the largest park in the country is now being fenced with electric wire to keep animals from escaping and destroying people’s human settlement.
