Rwanda and Tanzania are working on a new project

Rwanda government together with Tanzania, its neighbor in the East have come together to see the construction of a new bridge over the AKagera River at Rusumo and it is expected to be completed in late 2014 replacing the old single lane bridge that exists now and allow larger cargo volumes to cross from one country to another which are both member countries of the East African Community.

The old bridge is over 40 years and it’s and has weight restrictions as over weight might cause it to collapse into the river Kagera at the boarder of Rwanda and Tanzania. Its state makes it impossible to drive today’s modern long distance trucks across it which problem the new bridge will finally resolve. The bridge will be ready in the last months of this year and when formally inaugurated, it will operate 24 hours a day compared to the 16 hour this old one is operating which limits the movement of cargo and people across the common border.

This bridge is part of a major road corridor from the port of Dar es Salaam to Kigali and beyond, the project will penetrate to Burundi and Eastern Congo.

To be specific, the business community in Tanzania is so enthusiastic of  improving the  trade and tourism links and also so watchful of the possibility of losing out to its neighbor  Kenya, which together with Uganda and  Rwanda have established a fast tracking alliance for several key projects like the use of the common tourists Visa  and the unified customs clearance system but the biggest project is the use of a standard measure railway which is now under construction from Mombasa via Nairobi, through Uganda and on to Kigali.

This is all under the mainstream of EAC attitude towards progression and development of the 3 nations especially through their tourists’ attractions like the wildlife, historical sites, primates among others with easy accessibility from one nation to another.
