The Names and Meanings of Baby Gorillas in Rwanda

Each year, Rwanda Celebrates the Kwita Inzina – which actually is a ceremony during which baby mountain gorillas are named. This very lively event runs for a couple of weeks. GAHUZA

This name means ‘collaboration’. It symbolizes the trans-border collaboration between the DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda as the three countries jointly work to protect these mountain gorillas.

UBUBASHA

This name means “Power or strength” and was selected because of the great efforts the government of Rwanda has exhibited in conserving nature, especially the mountain gorillas.

ZIRAKAMWA

This name could mean “a milk productive cow” and was chosen to reference to an ancient slogan which was used to motivate people to keep peace by permitting mountain gorillas to be reproduce and even contribute to their wellness through generating revenue or for the economy of Rwanda.

INKUNGA

This name means “support.” and was selected to stress that gorilla conservation even now needs different kinds of support to preserve it for the generations to come.

INGINGO

This name means ‘main support or main sustaining factor’. It was chosen to identify the point that wildlife conservation is the main concern of the Rwanda government. It was picked to acknowledge the re-introduction of lions into Akagera National Park, the establishment of Gishwati-Mukura Park, plus several other successes.
