THE ONLY PYGMY HIPPO IN EASTAFRICA DIES AT NAIROBI SAFARI WALK

The first female pygmy hippo that has died at the Nairobi Safari Walk was donated by former Liberian President, the late William Tubman in the 1970s.

The hippo has died from pneumonia at 29 years and according to the reports that have been prepared by Kenya Wildlife Service Veterinarian Dr Edward Kariuki, the animal might have got the bacterial infection at the animal welfare house.

The Nile hippos are those that are famous in Eastafrica and a pygmy hippo can only be found in the remote places of West African forests and swamps of the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The pygmy hippos can be affected by deforestation, poaching and bush meat hunting. The numbers of the hippos that are remaining are 2,000-3,000 and they can mostly survive in the wild.
