rwanda-golden-monkeyTrekking golden monkeys in Rwanda is among the highlight activities enjoyed by tourists on their holiday during their Safaris in Rwanda. Within the depths of the verdant Volcanoes National Park forest, the Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Mitis Kandti) is very prevalent but also endemic to high altitude areas. These very playfully monkeys are also very inquisitive and regularly spend most of their time jumping from one bamboo branches to another or playing on the forest ground.

Currently Rwanda has two groups of habituated Golden Monkeys, one group found at the foot Mount Sabyinyo comprised of 80 to 100 members. Similar to the mountain gorilla treks, trekking to see the fascinating Golden Monkeys also begins in the mornings and all visitors are allowed a hours stay in the presence of these monkeys. On your Rwanda Safaris the Golden Monkey treks start at the Park’s Headquarters found at Kinigi by 07:00am. However the number of visitors per visit is not limited unlike with the gorilla trek. However, a trekking permit for these monkeys is at USD$100 per individual per trek. These Permits can either be pre-booked in advance or obtained at the park headquarters that very more of the trek.

There are also Porters for hire at the entry point into the park that can help carry your luggage. The cost of each porter is Rfr5,000 in the local currency. The local people have requested us to emphasize that hiring them as porters should not be looked at as humiliating or even exploiting thee, however as a form of employment which they gladly do and earn a living.

Fortunately not far from the park headquarters are various accommodation facilities such as Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge only 15 minutes drive from the headquarters

What to Wear When Trekking Golden Monkeys

Because this activity involve moving through the thick forest, we recommend that you hiking-bootswear thick trousers plus a long-sleeved top, and strong walking shoes

Also since the activity starts very early morning it’s recommended that you wear a sweater or sweatshirt or to also protect you against nettles. Keep in mind that the color of clothing you wear won’t affect the monkeys in any way.

Carry a waterproof bag to hold your delicate items like cameras and protect them against the morning mist.

For those who may feel safer using a walking stick, yes you can use one. These are also available for hire at the park headquarters.

In the rainy months, we advice that you carry a cloak or raincoat in your day-pack, addition of sunglasses plus a hat are as well a good idea.
