5 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Karisimbi Hike
5-day Rwanda gorilla trekking and Karisimbi hike safari is built for active travellers who want more than a short gorilla visit. It combines mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, a 2-day Mount Karisimbi hike and a relaxed finish on Lake Kivu. The tour starts in Kigali and travels north to the Musanze region, the main base for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After the gorilla trek, you begin the Karisimbi hiking experience, which takes you through high-altitude forest, bamboo zones, and volcanic landscapes before reaching the summit. Mount Karisimbi is one of Rwanda’s most demanding hiking experiences, reaching 4,507 metres as the highest of the eight major Virunga volcanoes. The hiking permit costs USD 400 for foreign visitors, while Rwanda’s gorilla trekking permit is priced at USD 1,500. This safari suits hikers, photographers, returning safari travellers and visitors who want to combine gorillas, mountains and Lake Kivu in one compact Rwanda itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1, Kigali Pickup and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your driver guide will meet you at the Airport, your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali. After a short safari briefing, you begin the drive to Musanze near Volcanoes National Park. The transfer usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and stops. The road is scenic, passing through Rwanda’s rolling hills, farming communities and small towns. If your flight arrives early, you may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or take a short Kigali city tour before travelling to Musanze. If arrival is late, it is better to drive straight to the lodge so you can rest before the gorilla trekking day. Accommodation options: Budget options: Kinigi Guest House, Muhabura Hotel, or Villa Gorilla, Mid-range options: Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge or Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Luxury options: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge or Virunga Lodge, Ultra-luxury options: Bisate Lodge, Singita Kwitonda Lodge or One&Only Gorilla’s Nest

Day 2, Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and briefing. Gorilla trekking reporting time is 7:00 a.m., so an early start is required. During the briefing, park guides explain the trekking rules, group allocation, safety guidelines and how to behave around the gorillas. Each gorilla group is visited by a maximum of 8 visitors, and viewing time is limited to one hour. Visitors are also asked to keep a 7 metre distance and avoid trekking when sick with flu, cold or any contagious illness. After the briefing, you drive to the trailhead and begin the trek with ranger guides and trackers. The walk can be short or demanding, depending on where the gorilla family is feeding that day. Trails may pass through bamboo forest, thick vegetation and steep volcanic slopes. Once the gorillas are located, you spend one hour watching them feed, rest, groom and interact. Flash photography is not allowed. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and rest. If time and energy allow, you may add a cultural visit to Iby’iwacu Cultural Village to learn more about Rwandan culture and the everyday lives of local communities

Day 3, Start the Mount Karisimbi Hike
After breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for Karisimbi hike registration and briefing. Your hiking guide will explain the route, safety rules, walking pace and overnight mountain camping arrangement. Mount Karisimbi is a serious high-altitude hike and is best for travellers with good fitness. The first hiking day takes you through forest, bamboo and volcanic vegetation as you climb towards the overnight camp. You will not summit on this first hiking day. The goal is to reach the mountain camp, rest, have dinner and prepare for the early summit push the next morning. The conditions can be cold and wet, especially at higher altitudes, so warm clothing, rain gear, gloves and proper hiking boots are important. Dinner and overnight at the Karisimbi mountain camp.
Day 4, Karisimbi Summit Hike and Transfer to Lake Kivu
Wake up early for the final push to the Karisimbi summit. The climb can be cold, steep and physically demanding, but the reward is the wide view across the Virunga volcanoes and surrounding landscapes when the weather is clear. After spending time at the summit, begin the descent back to the starting point. Your driver guide will be waiting to meet you after the hike. From the trailhead, transfer to Lake Kivu in the Gisenyi area. The drive gives you time to rest after the hike and enjoy a slower change of scenery from mountain forest to lakeside landscapes. Arrive at Lake Kivu in the evening, check in and relax by the lakeshore. Accommodation options: Budget option: Palm Garden Resort or similar, Mid-range option: Cormoran Lodge or Malahide Paradise, Luxury option: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel

Day 5, Lake Kivu Boat Ride and Return to Kigali
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning on Lake Kivu. Depending on the final lodge location and timing, you may take a short boat ride on the lake or enjoy the lakeshore before beginning the return journey to Kigali. If the route includes Kibuye, this should be confirmed clearly during booking because it changes the travel time and route plan. If time is limited, a shorter Lake Kivu boat ride around the Gisenyi area is more practical. After the lake experience, begin the drive back to Kigali. Arrival is expected later in the day, depending on stops, road conditions and the final Lake Kivu activity. You will be dropped off at your hotel, airport, or another agreed location.
