3 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali

This 3-day Rwanda gorilla trekking safari is designed for travellers who want a short, well-organised gorilla experience that starts and ends in Kigali. The tour takes you to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda’s leading mountain gorilla trekking destination, with private transfers, comfortable lodge options and expert guiding throughout the journey. The safari works well for visitors with limited time in Rwanda, including couples, solo travellers, families and guests adding gorilla trekking to a wider East Africa trip. The route gives you enough time to arrive in Kigali, travel to the Musanze region, trek mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, and return to Kigali for your onward flight or hotel stay. The main highlight is the gorilla trekking experience. After briefing at the park headquarters, you enter the forest with ranger guides and trackers to search for your assigned gorilla family. Once the gorillas are located, you spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat.

    Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Kigali Pickup, City Visit and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your driver guide will meet you at the  Airport, your hotel, or another agreed pickup point in Kigali. Depending on your arrival time, you may begin with a short Kigali city visit. This can include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a local market or a brief drive through the city to understand Rwanda’s history, culture and daily life. If your flight arrives later in the day, the city visit can be skipped so that you reach your lodge near Volcanoes National Park in good time. After the city visit, drive north to the Musanze region, close to Volcanoes National Park. The journey usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and passes through Rwanda’s rolling hills, farms and small trading centres. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon or evening. Your guide will brief you on the next morning’s gorilla trekking schedule, what to wear, what to carry and the time you need to leave for the park headquarters. Accommodation options: Budget options: Muhabura Hotel or Kinigi Guest House, Mid-range options: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge or Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, Luxury option: Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel or Bisate Lodge

Day 2, Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, your driver guide will transfer you to the Park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing. You have to report early in the morning at around 7 am for registration, permit checks and briefing. Ranger guides will explain the trekking rules, health guidelines, safety procedures, and then be allocated to a gorilla family. After the briefing, you will drive to the trailhead and begin the forest walk with rangers and trackers. The trek can be short or longer depending on where the gorillas are feeding or moving that day. The trail may pass through bamboo forest, open farmland edges, thick vegetation and volcanic slopes. Once the gorillas are located, you spend one hour with the family. You may see a silverback resting nearby, mothers caring for infants, young gorillas playing, or the family feeding quietly in the forest. Photography is allowed, but flash photography is not permitted. After the trek, return to the starting point and meet your driver guide. You will go back to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. If the trek ends early and you still have energy, an optional visit to the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo can be arranged at an extra cost.

Day 3, Return to Kigali and Departure

After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey to Kigali. The drive from Musanze to Kigali usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on road conditions and stops along the way. If your flight is later in the day, your guide can include a short stop for craft shopping, coffee or a city visit if it was not done on Day 1. You will be dropped off at Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali. For same-day flights, allow enough time between the road transfer and airport check-in, especially during busy travel periods.
