Activities from Virunga Volcanoes Lodge

Gorilla Tracking in Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla tracking is the main reason many travellers choose this lodge. From this base, you head into the dense African forest to track endangered mountain gorillas with park guides. Only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla group each day, so this activity feels controlled, personal, and carefully managed. During the encounter, guests are asked to keep a distance of 7 metres, about 22 feet, from the gorillas to reduce the risk of human disease transmission. The trek can take 2 to 8 hours, depending on where the gorilla family is feeding that day. You need a fair level of agility, but the experience can be arranged with different fitness levels in mind.

Golden Monkey Tracking in the Virunga Foothills

Golden monkey tracking gives you a lighter primate experience after or before gorilla trekking. These rare monkeys live in the volcanic foothills of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. They are easy to love once you see them moving through the bamboo. Their bright golden body, golden cheeks and tail contrast with black limbs, crown and tail end. The walk takes you through bamboo stands and forested gorges on the lower volcano slopes, then towards higher heath and moorland zones.

Dian Fossey Grave Hike Between Karisimbi and Visoke

For travellers interested in gorilla conservation, the hike to Dian Fossey’s grave adds real meaning to a stay in this region. The site lies in a beautiful meadow between Karisimbi and Visoke volcanoes, where Dian Fossey and some of her beloved research gorillas are buried. This trek starts early in the morning and takes around 6 to 8 hours. It suits guests who want to understand the conservation story behind Rwanda’s mountain gorillas, not only see them in the forest.

Bird Watching Around the Lodge and Rwanda Highlands

The lodge gardens and nearby trails are rewarding for bird watching, with the wider Rwanda landscape holding over 700 bird species. Rwanda also has the second-highest number of Albertine endemics in the Albertine region, which makes this area valuable for keen birders. You can enjoy birding between bigger activities, along garden paths, on guided walks, and around the volcanic slopes. The terraced gardens, quiet setting, and lake views give bird watchers a relaxed way to enjoy the lodge surroundings.

Volcano Hiking in the Virunga Chain

Guests also have access to the Virunga chain of volcanoes, where full-day hikes bring big views and a stronger mountain challenge. The three popular volcanoes mentioned for climbing are Mt. Gahinga, Mt. Sabinyo and Mt. Muhavura. The hikes vary in difficulty and take a full day. Treks start at 7:00 am from the park headquarters, then guests drive to the base of the chosen volcano. These climbs suit travellers who want hiking, open panoramas and a deeper feel of the volcanic landscape.
