1 Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Tour from Kigali
This 1-day Rwanda gorilla trekking tour is designed for travellers who have limited time in Rwanda but still want to see mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. The tour starts very early from Kigali and takes you to Musanze for a briefing, gorilla trekking, and returns to Kigali on the same day. Rwanda is one of the easiest places in East Africa for a short gorilla trekking experience because Volcanoes National Park is within a manageable driving distance from Kigali. This makes the tour suitable for business travellers, short-stay visitors, conference guests and travellers adding one major wildlife experience to a Rwanda itinerary. After briefing at the park headquarters, you continue to the trailhead with ranger guides and trackers. The trek can be short or longer depending on the location of the gorilla family on that day. Once the gorillas are located, you spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat before returning to Kigali later in the afternoon or evening.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1, Kigali to Volcanoes National Park Gorilla Trekking
Your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali very early in the morning, usually around 4:30 am. This early departure is important because you must arrive at Volcanoes National Park in time for registration and briefing. The drive from Kigali to Musanze takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on road conditions and the exact pickup location. The road is scenic, passing through Rwanda’s hills, farming areas and small trading centres before reaching the cooler highlands near Volcanoes National Park.

On arrival at the park headquarters, you will join other trekkers for registration and briefing. Ranger guides explain the gorilla trekking rules, health guidelines, group allocation and what to expect during the walk. Visitors are then assigned to a gorilla family and transferred to the starting point.
The trek begins with ranger guides and trackers leading you through the forest. The walking time can vary because gorillas move daily in search of food. Some treks are short, while others may take several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family, forest conditions, and your group’s pace.
Once the gorillas are located, you spend one hour with them. You may see a silverback resting, females feeding, young gorillas playing, or family members moving through the vegetation. Flash photography is not allowed, and you must follow the ranger’s guidance throughout the encounter.
After the trek, return to the starting point and meet your driver. You will continue to Musanze for lunch, then begin the return journey to Kigali. You will be dropped off at your hotel, Airport, or another agreed location in Kigali. For visitors flying out on the same day, an evening flight is recommended to allow enough time for the return drive.
