Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Kigali Pickup and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your driver guide will meet you at the  Airport, your hotel, or another agreed pickup point in Kigali. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a short Kigali city visit before leaving for Volcanoes National Park. This can include the Kigali Genocide Memorial or a local market visit if time allows. If your flight arrives later in the day, it is better to drive directly to Musanze so you reach your lodge in good time. The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The road is paved and scenic, passing through Rwanda’s rolling hills, farming communities and small towns before reaching the cooler highlands near the park. On arrival, check in at your lodge and settle in. Your guide will brief you about the next morning’s gorilla trekking schedule, including reporting time, what to wear, what to carry and how early you need to leave for the park headquarters. Accommodation options: Mid-range option: La Palme Hotel, Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge or Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Luxury option: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge or Virunga Volcanoes Lodge, High-end option: Bisate Lodge or One and Only Gorilla’s Nest

Day 2, Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the Park headquarters for registration and briefing. Ranger guides will explain the trekking rules, health guidelines, safety procedures and gorilla family allocation. Visitors are grouped according to permit availability, fitness level and the location of the gorilla families on that day. After the briefing, you will drive to the trailhead and begin the trek with rangers and trackers. The walk can be short or longer depending on where the gorillas are feeding or moving. The trail may pass through bamboo forest, thick vegetation, farmland edges and volcanic slopes. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one hour with the family. You may see a silverback, females with infants, young gorillas playing, feeding behaviour and quiet family interaction. Flash photography is not allowed, and visitors must follow the ranger’s instructions throughout the experience. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. If the trek ends early and you still have energy, an optional visit to the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo can be arranged at an extra cost. Dinner and overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park.

Day 3, Mount Bisoke Hike and Crater Lake Summit

After an early breakfast, return to the park headquarters for Mount Bisoke hike registration and briefing. Mount Bisoke is one of the Virunga volcanoes and is known for its crater lake near the summit. The hike is more demanding than gorilla trekking and is best suited to travellers with a reasonable level of fitness. After the briefing, you will drive towards the starting point and begin the hike with ranger guides. The trail passes through farmland edges, bamboo forest, Hagenia forest, giant lobelia zones, and alpine vegetation as you climb higher. The hike can take several hours depending on weather, trail conditions, and group pace. The path can be muddy, steep and slippery, especially during rainy periods. Porters are recommended because they help carry your daypack and support you on difficult sections of the trail. If the weather is clear, the summit gives views of the crater lake and surrounding Virunga landscapes. After time at the top, descend with your guides and return to the lodge for rest.

Day 4, Return to Kigali and Departure

After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey to Kigali. If you did not take a Kigali city visit on arrival day, this can be arranged before your airport drop-off, depending on your flight time. A stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft shops or a city viewpoint can be included if the schedule allows. Your guide will drop you at Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali. This marks the end of your 4 day Rwanda gorilla trekking and Mount Bisoke hike.
