4 Day Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari
This 4-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey safari is designed for you who want two of Rwanda’s best primate experiences in one short trip. The safari starts and ends in Kigali, then takes you to Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking in the Virunga foothills.
Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s leading gorilla trekking destination and one of the most important conservation areas in East Africa. It is known for mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, bamboo forest, volcanic scenery and the legacy of Dian Fossey’s gorilla conservation work.
This safari gives you one day with a habituated mountain gorilla family and another morning with golden monkeys. Gorilla trekking is the deeper, quieter forest experience, while golden monkey trekking is more active, playful and easier to combine with a short Rwanda itinerary. The tour works well for travellers with limited time, couples, solo travellers, photographers and visitors adding Rwanda to a wider East Africa safari.

Detailed Safari Itinerary
Day 1, Kigali Pickup and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your driver guide will meet you at the airport, your hotel or another agreed pickup point in Kigali. If you arrive early, you may begin with a short Kigali city visit. This can include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a local market or another suitable city stop depending on your interests and available time. If you arrive later in the day, it is better to drive straight to Musanze so that you reach your lodge in good time. The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The route is scenic, passing through Rwanda’s rolling hills, farming communities and small towns before reaching the cooler highlands near the park. On arrival, check in at your lodge and settle in. Your guide will brief you on the next morning’s gorilla trekking schedule, what to wear, what to carry and when to leave for the park headquarters. Dinner and overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park. Accommodation options: Budget option: Kinigi Guest House, Mid-range option: Gorilla View Lodge, Hotel Gorillas or Le Bambou Hotel, Luxury option: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge or Virunga Volcanoes Lodge
Day 2, Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing. The ranger guides will explain the trekking rules, health guidelines, forest safety, and group allocation. You will then be assigned a gorilla family and transferred to the trailhead where the trek begins. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are feeding or moving that morning. The walk may pass through bamboo forest, light mountain rainforest, farmland edges and volcanic slopes. Once the gorillas are located, you spend one hour with the family. You may see a silverback resting nearby, mothers caring for infants, young gorillas playing, or the family feeding quietly in the forest. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and rest. Packed lunch or snacks are recommended because some gorilla families may be further from the starting point. Dinner and overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park.
Day 3, Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, return to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a golden monkey trekking briefing. Golden monkey trekking is different from gorilla trekking. The monkeys are smaller, faster and more active, often moving through bamboo forests as they feed, jump between branches and interact in groups. The walk is usually lighter than gorilla trekking, although conditions can still be muddy depending on the weather. Once the golden monkeys are located, you spend one hour watching them in their natural habitat. This is a good activity for photography, but golden monkeys move quickly, so you should prepare for fast movement and forest light. If the trek ends early, you may add an optional visit to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo at an extra cost. This gives you more scenery and a relaxed afternoon after the forest activity. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4, Return to Kigali and Optional City Visit
After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey to Kigali. If you missed the Kigali city visit on Day 1, it can be arranged today depending on your flight time. A short visit may include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a local market or another city stop agreed with your guide. You will then be dropped off at the Airport, your hotel or another agreed location in Kigali. This marks the end of your 4-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey safari.
