Detailed Safari Itinerary
Day 1, Kigali Pickup and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your safari guide will meet you at the Airport, your hotel or another agreed-upon pickup point in Kigali. Depending on your arrival time, you may begin with a short Kigali city visit. This can include the Kigali Genocide Memorial or a local market visit for an introduction to Rwanda’s history, culture and daily life. If your flight arrives later in the day, the city visit can be skipped so that you reach your lodge near Volcanoes National Park in good time. The drive from Kigali to the Musanze region takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The route is scenic, passing through Rwanda’s rolling hills, farming communities and small towns before reaching the cooler highlands near Volcanoes National Park. On arrival, check in at your lodge and settle in. Your guide will brief you on the next morning’s gorilla trekking schedule, including reporting time, what to wear, what to carry and how the trekking day usually works. Dinner and overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park. Accommodation options: Mid-range option: La Palme Hotel or Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Luxury option: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge or Virunga Volcanoes Lodge, High-end option: Bisate Lodge or One and Only Gorilla’s Nest

Day 2, Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing. The ranger guides will explain the trekking rules, health guidelines and forest safety before you are assigned to a gorilla family. Group allocation is usually based on permit availability, fitness level and the location of the gorilla families on that day. After briefing, you will drive to the trailhead and begin the trek with ranger guides and trackers. The walk can be short or longer depending on where the gorillas are feeding or moving.
The trail may pass through bamboo forest, thick vegetation, farmland edges and volcanic slopes. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one hour with the family. This is the highlight of the safari. You may see a silverback resting nearby, mothers caring for infants, young gorillas playing, or the family feeding quietly in the forest. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. If the trek ends early and you still have energy, an optional visit to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo can be arranged at an extra cost. Dinner and overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park.
Day 3, Golden Monkey Trekking and Transfer to Lake Kivu
After breakfast, return to the park headquarters for golden monkey trekking briefing. Golden monkeys are active, fast-moving and highly photogenic. They are often found in the bamboo forest, where they feed, jump between branches and move in groups. This experience is usually lighter than gorilla trekking, but still rewarding and very different in pace. After the golden monkey experience, return to the lodge for lunch, then begin the transfer to Lake Kivu. The drive continues west towards the lakeside town of Gisenyi. After two forest trekking days, Lake Kivu gives the safari a softer and more relaxed finish. You can enjoy the lake views, take a quiet walk along the shoreline or relax at your hotel. Dinner and overnight stay on the shores of Lake Kivu. Accommodation options: Mid-range option:
Malahide Paradise Hotel or Palm Beach Hotel, Luxury option: Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, High-end option: Cleo Lake Kivu Hotel or a premium lakeside property on request

Day 4, Lake Kivu Boat Ride and Return to Kigali
After breakfast, take a boat ride on Lake Kivu. Depending on your location and lake conditions, the boat ride can include nearby islands like Napoleon Island, Amahoro and Nkombo islands, fishing villages, coffee washing stations, or lakeside communities and Nyamyumba Hot springs. This is a relaxed experience and a good way to enjoy the beauty of Lake Kivu before returning to Kigali. After the boat ride, return to the mainland and begin the drive back to Kigali. Your guide will drop you at Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location. This marks the end of your 4-day Rwanda gorilla trekking, golden monkey and Lake Kivu safari.
