Mount Gahinga Lodge in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mount Gahinga Lodge sits in the foothills of the forested Virunga Volcanoes in southwestern Uganda’s Kisoro District, close to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a calm mountain base for travellers who want gorilla tracking, golden monkey tracking, volcano hiking and quiet time around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. One of the best things here is the direct private footpath to the park. You wake up slowly, take in the cool Kisoro air, and walk to the briefing point without starting your day with a long transfer.
The lodge feels small, warm and personal, with only 8 hand-built bandas, including 6 standard bandas and 2 deluxe bandas. Each banda has an en-suite bathroom with a flushing toilet, double vanity, hot and cold running water, a shower, a cosy fireplace and a private porch facing the gardens and mountains. The style carries the building traditions and creative touch of the Bafumbira people, with natural materials such as wood and bamboo giving the rooms a strong sense of place. Private butler service adds comfort without making the lodge feel too formal. It still feels quiet, relaxed and close to the mountain.
This is a strong choice if you are coming to track the Nyakagezi gorilla family, the only habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and well known for its multiple silverbacks. From the lodge, you can also track rare golden monkeys, climb one of the Virunga volcanoes, walk through nearby villages, or spend time learning about the Batwa, among the oldest forest communities of Central Africa. These are not rushed activities. They give you time to feel the mountain, meet the people around it, and understand why this small corner of Uganda feels so different from the busier gorilla areas.
After a day on the trails, the lodge gives you quiet places to slow down. Meals can be served outside with views of the rolling mountain ranges or inside the dining room when the weather is cooler. The lounge, central fireplace, sun room and colourful gardens all make it easy to settle in with a book, listen to birdsong, watch sunbirds around the flowers, or sit by the fire as the mist moves over the volcanoes. The lodge opened in 2002 and was reimagined in 2019, with the lounge, dining room and gardens remodelled to create a more comfortable mountain retreat.

Mount Gahinga Lodge keeps the stay small, warm and personal, with only 8 unique hand-built bandas facing the Virunga Volcanoes. There are 6 standard bandas and 2 deluxe bandas, with 6 double rooms and 2 twin rooms across the lodge.
Each banda has a private veranda where you can sit quietly after trekking, look across the mountain gardens and take in the cool Virunga air. There are no guide or tour leader rooms at the lodge, so the property is designed mainly for booked guests staying before or after gorilla tracking, golden monkey tracking or volcano hiking.
Hand-Built Bandas Inspired by the Bafumbira People
The bandas are built with traditional designs and local materials, paying respect to the architectural style of the Bafumbira people, a Bantu community from Kisoro District. The rooms combine stone walls, natural textures, papyrus-style roofing, local artwork and warm fireplaces. This gives the lodge a strong sense of place rather than a standard hotel feel.
Inside, you find spacious bathrooms, private verandas, soft furnishings, books, quality drinks and snacks, and a personal butler service for every room. The bedrooms are cosy for the cooler mountain nights.
The interiors bring in local colour through Congolese kuba cloth, handwoven raffia palm details, woollen bedspreads, calico cotton curtains and African-print dressing robes. Bathrooms are open-plan and spacious, with en-suite showers, flushing toilets, double vanities, hot and cold running water, and organic toiletries.
Standard Bandas
The standard bandas are stone-built rooms designed to resemble traditional African huts while still giving you the comfort needed after a day in the forest. Each one has a spacious living area, a fireplace for warmth, an en-suite bathroom, a shower, a flush toilet, and hot and cold running water. These rooms work well for travellers who want a quiet, comfortable base close to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park without losing the mountain-lodge character.
Deluxe Bandas
The lodge has 2 deluxe bandas, created for travellers who want extra space and a more private feel. They are a strong choice for honeymooners, couples marking a special trip, or families who want more room to settle in. The deluxe bandas have beautifully decorated interiors, private verandas, spacious bathrooms and views across the gardens, forests and Virunga mountains beyond.
Lodge Facilities and Guest Comforts
The lodge is equipped with solar power, a restaurant and bar, open fireplaces, a library, Wi-Fi, laundry service and outdoor sitting areas where birdwatchers can relax between activities. Room facilities include coffee and tea, a safe, en-suite bathrooms and gowns.
The fireplaces are a real advantage here because this corner of southwestern Uganda gets cool, mainly in the evenings and early mornings. Dining is relaxed and generous. Guests enjoy 3-course meals in comfortable surroundings, with the option to dine on the privacy of their terrace or al fresco under the African night sky. Fresh vegetables for salads are grown locally, and special meals can be arranged on request.
