Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1, Kigali to Akagera National Park and Afternoon Game Drive

On arrival at the Airport, or after pickup from your hotel in Kigali, you will meet your driver guide for a short briefing about the safari. You then begin the drive east to Akagera National Park. The journey is about 120 km and takes around 2.5 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and stops along the way. The route passes through Rwanda’s countryside, small trading centres, farms and rolling hills before the landscape opens towards the warmer lowlands near Akagera. After arrival, check in at your lodge or camp and have lunch, depending on your arrival time. In the afternoon, head into the park for your first game drive. This is a good introduction to Akagera’s savannah, woodland and wetland scenery. Your guide will look for wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes, warthogs and elephants. Predator sightings such as lions and leopards, depend on luck and animal movement, but the afternoon drive gives you a strong first chance to understand the park’s terrain. Day 2, Full Day Akagera Game Drive and Lake Ihema Boat Cruise

After an early breakfast, begin your main wildlife viewing day in Akagera National Park. The morning game drive is important because wildlife is more active before the heat builds up. Your guide will explore the best tracks based on recent sightings and road conditions. Akagera’s northern plains are especially known for strong wildlife viewing, with chances of seeing buffaloes, elephants, zebras, giraffes, topi, impalas, waterbucks, warthogs and other plains game. This is also the best time to look for predators. Lions may be seen resting, moving through the grass or near areas with high antelope activity. Leopards are more elusive, so sightings depend on timing and luck. Rhinos may also be seen during game drives, although they are not guaranteed on every safari. After the morning drive, return for lunch and a short rest, or continue with a packed lunch, depending on the day’s route and lodge location.

In the afternoon, connect for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. This boat experience gives you a different side of Akagera, away from the vehicle tracks. You may see hippos in the water, crocodiles along the banks, elephants or buffaloes near the shore and many bird species around the lake. The boat cruise is one of the strongest highlights of this safari because it adds relaxed wildlife viewing and gives photographers better chances for hippos, crocodiles and water birds. After the boat cruise, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3, Morning Game Drive and Return to Kigali

After breakfast, you can take a final short game drive before leaving the park. This gives you another chance to look for wildlife missed on the previous days, especially animals that are active in the cooler morning hours. Your guide may focus on open plains, lakeside tracks or woodland sections, depending on where wildlife has been recently seen. This final drive helps complete the safari before the return journey. After the morning activity, exit Akagera National Park and drive back to Kigali. The return journey usually takes around 2.5 hours. Depending on your flight time and interest, you may be dropped at Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed location in the city.
