Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, our tour representative will meet you, welcome you to Rwanda, and brief you about your 5-day gorilla trekking and Mount Karisimbi hiking safari. After the briefing, begin the drive north to Kinigi, the main base for gorilla trekking and volcano hiking in Volcanoes National Park.

The drive from Kigali to the Volcanoes region takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. As you leave the city, the scenery changes into Rwanda’s rolling hills, cultivated valleys and highland communities. This is a good introduction to the landscapes that make the northern part of Rwanda so memorable.

If your arrival time allows, you can first take a short Kigali city tour before travelling to Kinigi. The visit can include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which gives important context to Rwanda’s history and recovery. After the city visit, continue to your lodge near Volcanoes National Park for dinner and overnight. Day 2, Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, your driver-guide will transfer you to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and the morning gorilla trekking briefing. The briefing starts at around 7:30 am and covers trekking rules, forest safety, gorilla viewing guidelines, and how to behave when you meet the gorillas.

After the briefing, you will be allocated a gorilla family and begin the trek with park ranger guides. The trek takes place on the forested slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, starting at high altitude and moving through bamboo, thick vegetation and mountain forest. The time spent trekking can vary because the gorillas move freely in their natural habitat.

Once your assigned gorilla family is found, you will spend one hour with them. This is the heart of the safari, watching the gorillas feed, rest, groom, and move through the forest at close but respectful distance. After the experience, trek back to the starting point where your driver-guide will be waiting. If time and energy allow, visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo in the afternoon. The lakes are a beautiful scenic extension after the gorilla trek, with views of water, hills, local villages and the volcano landscape.

Day 3, Start the Mount Karisimbi Hike

After an early breakfast, report to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters with your hiking gear and packed supplies for the Mount Karisimbi hike. Your guide team will complete the briefing and final preparations before the hike begins.

Mount Karisimbi is one of the volcanoes in the Virunga range and is known for its high-altitude conditions, cold temperatures and demanding trail. The name Karisimbi is associated with the white-capped summit, which can appear frosted during colder periods. This is not a casual walk, so travellers should be reasonably fit and prepared for a long mountain hike.

The first hiking day takes you through changing vegetation zones as you move from lower forest into higher mountain habitat. The trail can be muddy, steep and slow in some sections, especially after rain. Walk at a steady pace with your guides and porters, stopping for rest, water and lunch along the route.

You will continue to the first overnight camping area at around 3,700 metres above sea level. Dinner is prepared at camp, and the evening is spent resting before the summit attempt the next morning. Camping: Mount Karisimbi mountain camp

Day 4, Summit Mount Karisimbi and Return to Kigali

After an early breakfast at camp, continue the hike towards the summit of Mount Karisimbi. This is the most demanding part of the climb, with cooler temperatures, thinner air and slow mountain terrain. The final push can take several hours depending on weather, trail conditions and the pace of the group.

At the summit, take time to enjoy the views across the Virunga volcano landscape before beginning the descent. On clear days, the scenery is wide and rewarding, with mountain ridges, forested slopes and highland views stretching across the region. After photos and a short rest, start hiking back down with your guides.

The descent can also be tiring, so take your time and follow the guide’s pace. When you reach the base of the mountain, your driver-guide will meet you and transfer you back to Kigali. The drive gives you time to rest after the hike, with brief photo stops along the way if time allows. Arrive in Kigali and check in at your hotel for dinner and overnight. Luxury: Kigali Serena Hotel or The Retreat by Heaven, Mid-range: Four Points by Sheraton Kigali or Park Inn by Radisson Kigali, Budget: Step Town Motel or Inside Afrika Boutique Hotel

Day 5, Kigali City Tour and Airport Transfer

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and spend the day according to your flight schedule. If you did not visit Kigali on arrival day, you can take a short city tour before your airport transfer. The Kigali city tour can include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, craft shops, neighbourhood viewpoints or a relaxed lunch in the city. This gives you a final look at Rwanda’s capital before the safari ends. Later, your driver-guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight. Travellers with early flights can be taken directly to the airport after breakfast.
